Generative AI Policies

Journal of Schooling and Pesantren Studies (JSPS) recognises the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative AI technologies, including Large Language Models (LLMs), in scholarly communication and academic research. This policy aims to ensure that the use of AI technologies in research and publication is conducted responsibly, transparently, ethically, and in accordance with international standards of research integrity and publication ethics.

Purpose and Scope

This policy applies to authors, reviewers, editors, and all parties involved in the scholarly publication process within JSPS. The journal adopts principles aligned with the ethical recommendations and transparency standards promoted by:

  • Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
  • Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
  • International scholarly publishing standards and research integrity guidelines

Principles of Responsible AI Use

1. Human Accountability

Authors, reviewers, and editors remain fully responsible for all scholarly content. AI systems cannot assume authorship, accountability, or academic responsibility.

2. Transparency

Any use of AI technologies during manuscript preparation or research assistance must be clearly disclosed and transparently reported by the authors.

3. Integrity and Originality

AI technologies must not compromise scholarly originality, research validity, academic honesty, or publication ethics.

4. Non-Authorship of AI

AI tools, language models, or automated systems must not be listed as authors or co-authors under any circumstances.

Permitted Uses of Artificial Intelligence

Authors may use AI technologies solely as supportive tools within ethical and academic boundaries, including but not limited to:

  • Language editing, grammar checking, and academic proofreading
  • Reference organisation and citation formatting
  • Plagiarism and similarity checking
  • Data organisation, statistical assistance, or visualisation support
  • Technical assistance that does not alter the intellectual substance of the work

Prohibited Uses of Artificial Intelligence

The following uses of AI technologies are strictly prohibited:

  • Generating core scholarly arguments, research findings, or conclusions
  • Fabricating, falsifying, or manipulating data and citations
  • Producing ghostwritten or fully AI-generated scholarly manuscripts
  • Undisclosed AI-generated content materially affecting the manuscript
  • Manipulating peer-review, editorial evaluation, or academic integrity processes

AI Disclosure Requirements

Authors must transparently disclose any use of AI tools within the manuscript, preferably in the Acknowledgements section or a dedicated AI Disclosure Statement.

The disclosure should include:

  • Name of the AI tool or platform used
  • Version information, where applicable
  • Purpose of use (e.g., language editing or data support)
  • Confirmation that AI did not generate the core intellectual content

Ethical and Legal Considerations

Authors remain fully responsible for ensuring that the use of AI technologies complies with:

  • Academic integrity and responsible research conduct
  • Copyright and intellectual property regulations
  • Confidentiality and data protection standards
  • Ethical publication and authorship principles

Editorial and Peer Review Policy

All manuscripts submitted to JSPS are subject to the same rigorous editorial screening and peer-review procedures regardless of AI assistance.

Editors and reviewers may assess the appropriateness, transparency, and ethical implications of AI use as part of the evaluation of research integrity and originality. The use of AI technologies does not influence editorial decisions or reduce peer-review standards.

Compliance and Sanctions

Violations of this Generative AI Policy may result in editorial actions, including:

  • Manuscript rejection
  • Requests for clarification or revision
  • Retraction or correction of published articles
  • Temporary submission restrictions
  • Notification to affiliated institutions in cases of serious misconduct

Policy Review and Updates

This policy will be periodically reviewed and updated to align with technological developments, evolving ethical standards, and international scholarly publishing guidelines related to Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI.
